We made an arduous journey from Kathmandhu to Surkhet via an internal flight to Nepalgunj followed by a long four wheel drive journey across treacherous roads and over several land slips. The site itself is on land adjoining the hospital in Surkhet. Facilities at the hospital are very basic although the staff there were doing the best that they could under the extremely trying conditions. Surkhet sees patients from a wide catchment who have often themselves made lengthy and difficult journeys to reach help. Their need for further assistance was very apparent.
Contracts for the construction and implementation of the NRH project were signed on 30th March 2008 and construction began on 02 July 2008. The project in Surkhet has been constrained for a number of reasons in particular the unstable political situation in the country, monsoon rains (which can block links in to Surkhet) and significant cost inflation across most supply areas. These issues have no bearing on the necessity for our help and we remained as committed as ever to successfully opening a new centre in Surkhet (however our need for funds does not diminish).
The centre finally opened it doors with great excitement and delight in March 2009.
